Crimes of the Future (2022)

Crimes of the Future is a film by the much loved and hated Canadian director David Cronenberg. Starring Viggo Mortensen. With Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart.

A story that brings us back to the purest and most stylized Cronenberg, but also less brutal.

Plot

Saul Tenser is a performance artist in a strange world in the future. Humans adapt to a synthetic environment, with new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice,he publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances.

Our Opinion

A unique piece that takes an extraordinary narrative turn – and it is that turn that will have you not forget this film (it has to do with plastic). With its dark aesthetics it is not a comfortable viewing experience, after all it does depict a dystopia. The performances are near perfection, and somehow Cronenberg has an ability of saying what he wants to say through his direction and leave a mark.

Viggo Mortensen is an American actor known for films such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Eastern Promises and Alatriste.

Viggo Peter Mortensen was born on October 20, 1958 in New York, USA.

This actor became known for the movie starring Harrison Ford, Witness in 1985, playing one of the farmers. Later, he appeared in Crimson Tide (with Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington; directed by Tony Scott). He appeared in a few other films like Portrait of a Lady (starring Nicole Kidman) and G.I. Jane and even did a movie in Spain playing Captain Alatriste… but he became known to the audiences for Peter Jacson‘s trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, in which he played the role of Aragon.

Lately we have seen him in Crimes of the Future (2022), by David Cronenberg, with whom he had already worked in A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, a great film that we recommend.

We loved him in Green Book (2018) and he’s also directed Falling (2020).

Other Reviews

David Cronenberg goes full Cronenberg (…) As has often been the case with the director’s second-tier work, the approach is too cold and cerebral to, ahem, get under the skin.

David Rooney: The Hollywood Reporter

A speculative horror-comedy as wildly deranged as it is beautifully controlled (…) it’s marvelous to have Cronenberg back and to behold his undimmed, unparalleled skill at welding the formulations of horror and science fiction to the cinema of ideas
