Elizabeth Anne “Lizzy” Caplan is an American actress. She first gained recognition for her roles in the films Mean Girls, Cloverfield and Hot Tub Time Machine. She has since become known for playing prominent roles in television series such as True Blood, Masters of Sex and New Girl. Throughout her career she has garnered many awards and accolades for her work, including a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series and two Emmy Award nominations.

Caplan was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. As a child she attended Alexander Hamilton High School before being accepted into Juilliard’s drama program where she studied acting. In 2004 she made her big screen debut with the film Mean Girls which was a runaway success that catapulted Caplan to fame. Following this success came a string of roles in films like Hot Tub Time Machine, 127 Hours, Bachelorette, Now You See Me 2, Allied and Extinction among others.

On television, Caplan found further success with the HBO vampire series True Blood (2008-2014) as well as Showtime’s critically acclaimed drama series Masters of Sex (2013-2016). In addition to these shows she has also played recurring or guest roles on shows like Party Down (2009-2010), Castle Rock (2018-2019), New Girl (2011-2018) and 23 episodes of The Class (2006-2007).

In 2016 she won the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her performance in Masters of Sex while receiving Emmy Award nominations twice – once in 2013 and again in 2014 – both for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for the same show. Additionally, she received multiple other award nominations including five Satellite Awards nominations between 2008 and 2010 along with several People’s Choice Awards nods during that same period.
