“Meg 2: The Trench” is a movie directed by Ben Wheatley starring Jason Statham, Wu Jing, and Shuya Sophia Cai.
A film that confesses its intentions in the very first scene, like a straightforward Friday date: a megalodon gobbles up a T-Rex, leaving us truly impressed by its size. The movie revolves around big things, really big things!
After the brilliant (philosophically speaking) sequence, the story continues with Statham doing push-ups and getting into a fight, just because he can, and then he dives into the ocean like James Bond while an airplane happens to pass by and rescues him.
The rest of the movie is a conscious repetition of the first one, with a dose of action, lots of special effects, and of course, Jason Statham in this Jurassic Park with a slight Chinese accent.
We don’t know if it will be the best movie in the history of cinema (it won’t be), but it’s so stupid that we can confidently say: guaranteed entertainment.
Review of “Meg 2: The Trench”
A joke here, a megalodon there, another one over there, prehistoric reptiles, and a story that is written just like the first movie, a kind of Jurassic Park, but this time in the sea and even more Jurassic than the previous one, more spectacular and even with giant octopuses that eat (we imagine) the tourists.
A movie full of action that is born as a blockbuster, is filmed as one, and exists in its two-hour lifespan with the sole concern of offering action, entertainment, and fun.
We had already said it about the first one, the poodle is very charming (we couldn’t have been the only ones who found it funny in the first movie, so they decided to repeat this joke).
I read somewhere that it’s a “dull” sequel: I don’t know what some people have for breakfast to qualify this movie as “dull,” but I assure you it is anything but tasteless.
Our Opinion
It’s extravagant, circus-like, comedic, spectacular, and so stupid and aware of its stupidity that it can (and should) only worry about one thing: entertaining.
Enjoy the show.
The Cast
Jason Statham
Jason Statham, born on July 26, 1967, is an actor from England. He is well-known for playing tough, gritty, and sometimes violent characters in action-thriller movies.
During his youth, Statham engaged in Chinese martial arts, kickboxing, and karate as a recreational activity while working at local market stalls. He was also an enthusiastic footballer and diver, representing England in the 1990 Commonwealth Games as a member of the national diving team. His experience working at market stalls led to modeling opportunities for French Connection, Tommy Hilfiger, and Levi’s in various advertising campaigns. This eventually led to his casting in crime films like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Snatch (2000), directed by Guy Ritchie.
The success of these films propelled Statham into the role of Frank Martin in the Transporter trilogy (2002โ2008). He further solidified his position as a leading actor in Hollywood by starring in heist and action-thriller films such as The Italian Job (2003), Crank (2006), War (2007), The Bank Job (2008), The Mechanic (2011), Spy (2015), and Mechanic: Resurrection (2016). However, he has also appeared in movies that were commercially and critically unsuccessful, including Revolver (2005), Chaos (2005), In the Name of the King (2007), 13 (2010), Blitz (2011), Killer Elite (2011), Hummingbird (2013), and Wild Card (2015). Statham regained commercial success as part of the ensemble cast in The Expendables series (2010โ2014) and the Fast & Furious franchise. He portrayed Deckard Shaw in Fast & Furious 6 (2013), Furious 7 (2015), The Fate of the Furious (2017), F9 (2021), and the spin-off Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019). Statham received his first production credit as a co-producer for Hobbs & Shaw.
While Statham’s acting has been criticized for lacking depth and variety, he has also been praised for his contribution to the resurgence of action films during the 2000s and 2010s. According to a BBC News report, his films from 2002 to 2017 generated an estimated $1. billion (ยฃ1. billion) in ticket sales, making him one of the most commercially successful actors in the film industry.
