Fool Me Once is a series based on the novel by Harlan Coben starring Michelle Keegan. With Adeel Akhtar, Richard Armitage, and Joanna Lumley.

“Fool Me Once” is a good TV thriller filled with deceit, step-siblings, and mysteries that gradually uncover the truth behind a murder and a web of conspiracies.

It is constructed somewhat like a TV movie, especially in terms of aesthetics and pacing: a seemingly perfect mother suspected of her husband’s murder. In terms of plot and aesthetics, it closely resembles a TV movie or those television series that entertain without leaving a lasting impression. It aims to satisfy the audience and behaves predictably, remaining consistent with the genre, but it won’t change our lives in any way.

It entertains without much originality, but it is well-structured and definitely not a Hallmark-type series, although at times it may resemble one in terms of its production and narrative elements.

It manages to maintain a sufficient distance, with well-executed action scenes and a careful presentation of suspicions, suspects, and plot twists.

About the series

An eight-episode mystery and a woman of virtue and strength who must uncover what was truly hidden behind the death of her seemingly perfect husband. It could have been a Hallmark TV movie, but it’s not. It knows how to maintain just the right distance to appeal to less visually demanding viewers while still satisfying those who only want to watch a well-executed mystery, even if it occasionally feels too conventionally made for television.

“Fool Me Once” is by no means a brilliant series, but it’s not a bad one either. It faithfully caters to its target audience and understands that this audience wouldn’t appreciate a gruesome and dark truth or deep psychological layers. Everything in “Fool Me Once” is simple, presented in a way that allows the audience to easily follow the story, prepackaged and tailored to its environment. It doesn’t shine because it wasn’t conceived to shine, but to entertain.

Our Opinion

There’s room for everything on television, especially on non-specialized channels, and “Fool Me Once” has everything it takes to please an audience looking for a good TV thriller that, without much to say, provides just the right amount of entertainment, with pace and surprises, without ever standing out.
