NANZUKA is pleased to present a tandem solo exhibition with New York-based American artist Jonathan Chapline, “Statuesque” at NANZUKA 2G and “Private Domain“ at 3110NZ. These 2 exhibitions marks Chapline’s second solo showcasing in Japan.

In the context of Chapline’s work, the word “rendering” extends beyond the framework of computer language to be used as an art term. From the shape of the objects, to the perspectives from which they are captured, the texture of their surfaces, the light source, and shading, Chapline simulates all physical elements necessary for the production of his paintings in advance on a computer screen using a 3D program. Such a production method seems to be in denial of the classic art historical myth that describes the painter’s eyes as being nurtured through the act of sketching. Interestingly however, Chapline studies the masterpieces of artists such as Cézanne, Picasso, Fernand Léger, Matisse, Max Beckman, Philip Guston, Thomas Hart Benton, Alexander Archipenko, and Henri Laurens and engages in depicting numerous works that attempt to mimic and reinterpret them through his own distinctive style.

In this exhibition, Chapline tries to capture the changing light of the day and express the relationship between time and space. In the new painting “Disassembled Home”, components of the house are arranged separately as if parts of a dollhouse but the light covering the entire space unites the atmosphere giving us clearer context. Chapline, who is a part of the tech generation that is able to use a mouse as one would use a pencil is able to shift between traditional ways of seeing to digital means.

For this exhibition, Chapline produced 3 new paintings and 2 new sculptures. During the exhibition period, the gallery will implement necessary measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and ensure the safety of our visitors. We look forward to welcoming you to the exhibition.
