Sean Kelly is delighted to announce a solo presentation of new site-responsive paintings by New York-based artist Landon Metz, created specifically for The Art Show. In his practice, Metz continues to develop a language of refinement-by-reduction, eliminating the inessential in search of the fundamental. Breaking down distinctions between foreground and background, subject and object, his lyrical abstractions—in which pigment is slowly and methodically absorbed into the canvas in prescribed patterns—are a product of a careful synthesis that considers not just the production of the work, but also the manner in which it is presented and received.

Describing his process, Metz has observed, “I like to think about the object of the painting as a form in the world, so it has a sense of physical self. One can separate that object from its environment, it has an autonomous physical nature.” For The Art Show, Metz, will create a series of individual, yet interrelated works that engage rhythm and repetition to respond to the architecture and structure of our booth.

In late November, Sean Kelly and Hatje Cantz will publish the first monograph dedicated to the work of Landon Metz, with essays by Christopher Schreck and Alex Bacon. The full-color, hardcover book will examine the trajectory of Metz’s career since 2014.

Metz’s work has appeared in numerous solo exhibitions internationally, in Norway, Italy, The United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark and Canada. In 2014, he was artist in residence at the ADN Collection in Bolzano, Italy. In 2018, Metz was the subject of a solo exhibition at Museo Pietro Canonica in Rome. Metz was recently featured in the group exhibitions Blue., at The Nassau County Museum of Art In New York, and Greffes, curated by Pier Paolo Pancotto at the Villa Medici in Rome. Metz was born in Phoenix, Arizona and currently lives and works in New York.
