Movie Review

Well, we were not disappointed, given that our expectations were not set high in light of our experience with the prequel. Under the Amalfi Sun is a lighthearted comedy, without doubt aimed at a young audience, who might actually enjoy it. You know, it has all the ingredients for breezy entertainment: beautiful people basking in the sun, yachting around, loads of music, party, and just enough drama to keep the audience pent up in slight intrigue, giving the story-line a modicum of allure. It seems that the name of the game in contemporary YA summer movie genre is that of young love overcoming common relationship dilemmas against a splendid sunny seaside backdrop in high resolution. Indeed, this is yet another coming of age love story set in a chic littoral town.

As a matter of fact, I had a dรฉjร  vu of sorts…. A few days ago we were served the teen love intrigue that unfolds in the French movie Dangerous Liaisons (2022), also set in a “stupendous” coastal town. Apparently, the expression ‘location, location, location’ is no longer exclusive to real estate, and can now be applied to low budget movie productions too. The scenery is what saves the watching experience for me. OK, I will admit the soundtrack pepped it up a bit, and kept me awake.

The plot is run of the mill. Living up to the requirements for an acceptable summer rom-com: beach sun, young dude loves young gal, both of whom have their best pals as sidekicks and of course. Could it be any blander? The script is so easy to digest that you will breeze through this movie. So just pour yourself a cold summer drink, sit back, and enjoy the scenery Amalfi has to offer.
