Sydney – Thursday 25 August, 2022. The Sydney Opera House today announced that powerhouse American singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten will return to the Opera House on Thursday 1 December, bringing her signature intensity for one epic performance in the newly-transformed Concert Hall. After stunning audiences in a sold-out Joan Sutherland Theatre as part of Vivid LIVE in 2019, the Brooklyn-born indie-rock fixture returns for her only Sydney headline show.

Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Music, Ben Marshall, says: “I first saw Sharon Van Etten perform in 2011 at Bryce Dessner’s MusicNOW festival in Cincinnati and was immediately struck by the force of her talent and presence. Her artistic powers have only grown over the years, and her Sydney Opera House debut in 2019 on the Joan Sutherland Theatre stage as part of Vivid LIVE is seared into my memory. So it’s an enormous privilege to announce Sharon Van Etten’s first appearance in the renewed Concert Hall on her fiercest and most epic album yet, We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong. Come see this utterly compelling artist at the height of her powers this summer.”

Fresh off her American tour, Van Etten will perform her intensely personal new album, We‘ve Been Going About This All Wrong, a stunning meditation on how life’s changes can be both terrifying and transformative. Van Etten spent the pandemic musing on how we feel, mourn and reclaim our agency in a world that might be falling apart, resulting in one of her most affecting – and epic – records to date. Audiences will also be treated to a selection of classics including 2014’s Are We There – described by Rolling Stone as “one of the great albums of the century” – and 2019’s sonically dazzling, synth-fueled Remind Me Tomorrow.

Sharon Van Etten says: “Australia and the Sydney Opera House?! My first shows in Sydney were at the Spiegeltent. My next show in Sydney was at The Factory. My last show in town was at the Opera House’s beautiful Joan Sutherland Theatre. And now, I am at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall! To my Australian fans, THANK YOU! We have built this together. I have always been about the slow build, in almost everything I do in life, and what we have done together in Sydney is no different. I cannot wait to see you all at the Concert Hall on Dec 1! Until then… x Shazza.”
