Killer Sally is a three part true crime doc series about the former body-builder Sally McNeil who was convicted of second degree murder of her husband, Ray McNeil. A case that made it all the way to the highest court in the land.

Directed by Nanette Burstein, it is laden with interviews with Sally McNeil herself, friends, family members, and few experts in various fields.

Premise

Sally McNeil was convicted of second degree murder of her husband in 1996. This documentary series includes interviews with friends, family and Sally McNeil herself. It charts a bodybuilding couple’s rocky marriage — and its shocking end in a Valentine’s Day murder.

About the Series

We start off by watching an interview with Sally McNeil, recounting how she met Ray McNeil. Both in the Marines, both bodybuilders, it was love at first sight.

The documentary also gives us an quick glimpse into the world of bodybuilding on the competitive level, but only just a glimpse.

Slowly, but surely the story becomes more grisly. In the second episode we are given all sorts of sordid details about the domestic violence that had taken place, provided in the testimonies given by Sally McNeil and her two grown children. It basically chronicles the occurrences step by step from Sally McNeil’s perspective.

It might be of interest to experts in the fields of criminology or forensic sciences. I doubt it would be interesting to anybody else, not even to bodybuilders (it does not delve that much into the sport). It is sordid, lurid and has minimal entertainment value.
