Copenhagen Cowboy is a noir-thriller series written and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, starring Angela Bundalovic, Zlatko Buric, and Lola Corfixen.

An odyssey where the mystical meets the mob on a neon colored stage. Harsh, brutal, stylized and very aesthetic – this is not a series for the faint of heart.

About the Series

Copenhagen Cowboy (2022-)

A peculiar number that will be to the liking of Winding Refn and Lynch fans alike. The mystical merges with the most crude of the underground world of crime.

In six episodes we follow Miu, the young woman who is believed to have special powers, and is used as a charm of sorts. Initially by the superstitious “medieval” mob auntie, a middle-aged woman who yearns to get pregnant. And so, it takes off in the dank setting of a brothel, where Miu will work subtle magic while she observes the strange goings-on. Her journey does not stop there, there are various legs to it. Each “pit-stop” supposes, for the protagonist, a confrontation with sordid existences, which compels her to exact revenge, with some exceptions where she will save the subjects, to balance the karmic scales (so to speak).

In true Winding Refn style – who some might compare to Gaspar Noé in his portrayal of the harshest – here he has created a series with singular aesthetics, that unfolds at a very paced tempo, is brutally honest in its portrayal of its characters the good and, especially, the evil.

As the series evolves, some comedic licenses are taken, particularly in its ironic commentary of the “importance” and “divinity” of the male member, but these moments of humor are few and far between.

Do not expect a feel-good series that will allow you to escape to a lovely fantasy land. Unpleasant in the beginning, it wins you over as the story unfolds. In fact, one cannot but be impressed by this unique tour de force.
