Fanfic is a film directed by Marta Karwowska starring Alina Szewczyk.
Fanfic is a film in a juvenile key that narrates, once again, the problems of a teenager girl “pissed off” with the world, her family, and the environment.
Nothing new under the sun (even the boy she likes is charming), but with cinematic ideas to offer and a realistic editing that makes it, at least, show some intentionality.
Whether it will convince everyone is another matter.
About the movie
Fanfic is one of those films of self-development, self-discovery, initiation… whatever you want to call it. There are thousands of them, it is true, but this one takes adolescence and its problems seriously, getting into the matter and delving into a difficult character that, little by little, and if we take our time to listen to her, manages to reach the viewer.
It is the usual story, it doesnโt want to tell us anything exceptional and no one here pretends to make a blockbuster neither of life nor of the film. A lot of handheld camera, naturalness… a cinema that wants to get to the truth without hardly intervening in the story, without deceiving us and without making the characters behave stick totally to the script, which wants to go unnoticed (the script, yes).
It is a film that has the wisdom to let the character be the one to shape the story, not to interfere and tell us this story, simple and barely different.
A love story, yes, but itโs more a film about inner growth, family, environment, and naturalness.
One of those films that you either get into because of the character or simply don’t get into.
Give it time and take the film with calm and easiness.
Our Opinion
A film that wants to be “special” precisely by telling a story that, without being special, becomes special in its intense sense of naturalness.
