Alisan Fine Arts, New York, proudly presents “Light, Space and Time,” an exhibition showcasing the creative genius of three California-based Asian American artists – Julie W Chang, Summer Mei Ling Lee, and Zhang Jian-Jun. Reflecting influences from the Californian coast and the historic Light and Space movement, each artist interprets light and space from a unique perspective, adding a dimension of time in their work, deeply rooted in historical and cultural contexts.
“Light, Space and Time,” running from May 2 through June 22, 2024, celebrates the unique light of the California coast that has inspired generations of artists and its role in shaping the atmospheric works affiliated with the Light and Space movement. This exhibition integrates the element of time, weaving and layering historical and contemporary cultural symbols, personal histories, and natural world considerations. The result is a body of work that contemplates how personal and historical narratives influence our surroundings and perceptions.
Julie W Chang uses painting as a tool to analyze the construction and deconstruction of identities. Her work employs ancient and contemporary cultural symbols to uncover hidden histories and depict the cultural hybridity inherent in today’s global society. Chang’s compositions on exhibit encapsulate human history and contemporary realities, mirroring the rich tapestry of global cultural exchanges.
Summer Mei Ling Lee’s paintings explore themes of presence and absence, impermanence of cultural heritage, and humankind’s unknowable relationship with nature. Presenting family photos printed on layers of gauze, Lee’s work offers shifting perspectives, symbolizing the fluidity of memory and human history affected by time and place. Her use of gold leaf in “Annunciation 1 and Annunciation 3” provides a luminous, sacred platform for her ancestors, descendants, and avian companions to emerge or withdraw.
Zhang Jian-Jun, an artist based in Venice, Los Angeles, works on paintings and sculptures that delve into the interaction between humans and nature, traces left by humanity over time, and the relationship between traditional and modern lifestyles. His works on exhibit are inspired by natural phenomena, from the sun’s light to raindrops to the cosmos, contemplating the immense passage of time. The sculptures contrast historical artifacts with contemporary materials, reflecting on the nature of global connectivity and cultural exchange.
This group exhibition coincides with Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, May 2024, recognizing the immense contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the United States’ history, culture, and achievements.
