David Zwirner to Launch New Utopia Editions Prints + Participate in IFPDA Print Fair

David Zwirner will participate for the first time in the IFPDA Print Fair in New York, the largest international fair dedicated to fine art prints

This fall, David Zwirner is pleased to announce forthcoming prints from Utopia Editions—the gallery’s fine art print publisher established in 2021—by Katherine Bernhardt, Raymond Pettibon, and Tunji Adeniyi-Jones.

During New York’s “Print Week” in October, the gallery will debut two new prints by Katherine Bernhardt (co-published with Counter Editions) and two new lithographs by Raymond Pettibon at the IFPDA Print Fair (October 27–30).

The two large-scale lithographs by Bernhardt are part of an ongoing body of work depicting cultural trends that have captured her son’s imagination. Pikachu and Ditto feature the eponymous characters from the Pokémon universe, rendered in Bernhardt’s exuberant style. As with her painting practice, the artist approaches printmaking instinctively, often embracing incidental by-products of the printing process.

Two new lithographs by Pettibon feature the artist’s signature mark-making paired with his characteristically wry, satirical handwritten text. No Title (He doesn’t really…) depicts a heart, a recurring motif within the artist’s oeuvre that is at once personal and metaphorically significant. In No Title (Fck All Y’All!), a stern, neon-hued parrot screeches an impassioned expletive, rendered in Pettibon’s handwriting. Tropical birds, such as the one depicted in this new lithograph, are a recurring motif in the artist’s work. The imagery from this print was featured in Supreme’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection.

David Zwirner’s presentation at this year’s IFPDA Print Fair in New York marks the gallery’s first-ever participation in the largest international fair dedicated to fine art prints. It will debut the new Bernhardt and Pettibon prints and feature prints published by Utopia Editions over the last year, alongside other prints by David Zwirner gallery artists. Also on view will be a new lithograph by Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, to be released exclusively on davidzwirner.com in November. A suite of six smaller lithographs by Adeniyi-Jones will be available at the IFPDA Print Fair.

Also opening in October is the exhibition Visual Record: The Materiality of Sound in Print, the inaugural exhibition at the new location of Print Center New York (formerly International Print Center New York), curated by Elleree Erdos, Director of Prints & Editions at David Zwirner. The exhibition investigates how artists since the 1970s have employed print-based processes to examine the relationship between sound and its visual representation.

Erdos states, “Since I joined David Zwirner last year with the goal of building and launching Utopia Editions, we have released eight editions with David Zwirner gallery artists and others, including Marcel Dzama, Rosa Loy, Ebecho Muslimova, and Neo Rauch. Through these projects and our upcoming releases, we have collaborated with various independent printmakers in New York and abroad. Now, one year later, we are so pleased to demonstrate our continued commitment to the world of prints and participate in the IFPDA Print Fair. October is always an exciting time for the print community, and the re-opening of Print Center New York in its new ground-floor location marks a pivotal moment for the future of the field.”

Following the release of Bernhardt’s and Pettibon’s prints in October, Utopia Editions will release the new print by Tunji Adeniyi-Jones on November 15. This print will be exclusively available and presented on davidzwirner.com.
