New York… For Frieze New York 2021, the city’s first ‘IRL’ art fair since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Hauser & Wirth is pleased to bring together an array of outstanding contemporary and historic works by leading American artists from the gallery’s program. Celebrating New York’s re-emergence this spring, the presentation
will place significant paintings, sculptures, and works on paper at the gallery’s booth (A06) at The Shed and on the fifth floor of its West 22nd Street building throughout the duration of the fair.
Hauser & Wirth’s Booth will be complemented by a digital iteration on the Frieze Online Viewing and by a special project with the New York non-profit Project EATS for the fair’s Vision & Justice Tribute.
Details of the Booth at Frieze
Hauser & Wirth’s Booth (A06) at The Shed will debut a new series of works by Rashid Johnson, expanding the visual language of his ongoing Anxious Men series via a palette in shades of blue and grey. Johnson’s latest paintings suggest the bruising realities of the past year while inviting reflection on possible paths to healing in a
post-pandemic future.
Also on view will be a major large-scale work by Gary Simmons, in the gallery’s first presentation of work by the artist since announcing its representation of Simmons in March 2021. Simone Leigh will be represented on the stand by a recently completed sculptural bust of a female figure.
Other highlights of the Booth include ‘The Drifter’ (2021), a portrait by George Condo of an invented character;
an acrylic and charcoal painting from Henry Taylor’s Jockey and Caddy series; and a recent sculpture by Paul
McCarthy. These important contemporary works will be complemented by historic masterpieces, including a 1968 Philip Guston gouache depicting an open book and a grandly gestural 1954 painting by Ed Clark.
Hauser & Wirth’s Booth will also include major works by gallery artists Larry Bell, Louise Bourgeois, Jenny Holzer, and Roni Horn.
Parallel Presentation at West 22nd Street
The works on view in Hauser & Wirth’s Booth at The Shed will be complemented by a special five-day presentation occupying the entire fifth floor the gallery’s building at 542 West 22nd Street.
For the duration of Frieze New York 2021, visitors to the space will be able to see an additional group of foremost works of modern and contemporary art by gallery artists, as well as a new limited edition serigraph print by Los Angeles-based artist Henry Taylor – an arresting work depicting Malcolm X in an homage to acclaimed late artist John Baldessari. Proceeds of sale of this edition of 20 will go to California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) where Baldessari was a beloved teacher.
As part of Frieze New York 2021 Vision & Justice Tribute, Hauser & Wirth will introduce a special presentation devoted to the acclaimed New York food justice and social action non-profit Project EATS on the gallery’s fifth floor. Conceived by Linda Goode Bryant, Project EATS explores a role and purpose for art that has direct consequence on daily life. Using food as its key medium, Project EATS is creating a network of small-plot, high-yield farms that organically grow and distribute food in communities that need fresh, nutritious food. These farms also provide a platform for people living in low wealth communities to shape and create the fair and just world they envision. Solo Exhibitions
On 5 May, in conjunction with Frieze New York 2021, Hauser & Wirth will inaugurate two major solo exhibitions at its West 22nd Street building in the Chelsea Arts District: ‘Frank Bowling – London / New York’ and ‘Tetsumi Kudo. Metamorphosis.’
On 14 May, the gallery will open an exhibition of work by Hunter College’s MFA Program in Studio Art.
