Jono Toh: You Tell Me – H Queen’s, Hong Kong

“You Tell Me” is a vibrant exploration of the relationships formed between shape and colour, investigating the visual and emotional dynamics that reside within these foundational elements. Each painting emerges as a sophisticated and playful orchestration of geometric and fluid forms. An imaginative mélange of big, bold and bright abstraction that serve as a conduit to Toh’s visual language of expression. He uses a visual vocabulary of circles, ovals and curved lines, melodiously intertwining in mathematical rhythms. His approach to painting leverages the abstract to distil the world around us into essential components, creating pieces that while devoid of figurative representation, are nonetheless packed with significance and a sense of the familiar.

Toh intends his work to not merely exist as an object of admiration, but rather act as an invitation for an interactive experience, asking viewers to engage their imagination, to see beyond the surface and to form and connect with personal associations. His desire is to spark playful and fun conversations and inspire meaningful exchanges that transcend the physical dimensions of the canvas. This interactive dynamic lends his artwork an inherent multiplicity of meaning, wherein each painting can be seen and interpreted in myriad ways.

It is through this process that Toh finds the true value of his work – the ability to connect, communicate, and to ultimately transform the way we perceive the world around us.
