March 10, 2023 – Kering and Phaidon are pleased to partner again to celebrate the acclaimed book, Great Women Painters,on the occasion of Dallas Art Month. Praised by Vanity Fair as one of the Season’s Best Art Books, the survey tells the stories of more than three hundred artists born in sixty countries worldwide from the sixteenth century to present day, revealing a richer and more diverse telling of the story of painting.

On Wednesday, April 19 and Thursday, April 20, the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) will host a series of three programs featuring Great Women Painters artists: Jennifer Guidi, Tschabalala Self, Genesis Tramaine, and Lisa Yuskavage, presented by Phaidon and Kering. In addition, Phaidon and its sister company Artspace will debut a new charitable limited edition by Guidi, a Los Angeles-based painter. Proceeds from the sale will support the DMA in its mission to keep equity at the core, including its efforts to empower and spotlight women artists. The public panel discussion on April 19 will feature all four artists in conversation moderated by Dr. Anna Katherine Brodbeck, the DMA’s Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art. Held in the museum’s Horchow Auditorium as part of its Arts & Letters Live series, the panel will explore their practices and reflect on great women painters, artists, and mentors—past, present, and future. A private dinner in honor of the artists hosted by Kering, Phaidon, and the DMA will immediately follow in the museum’s atrium.

On Thursday, April 20 the artists will return to the museum for a private mentoring session with a group of local students and educators from the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

Founded in 1903, the DMA has continued to grow in its emphasis on collecting and exhibiting women artists, particularly within the Postwar and Contemporary Art collection, which has seen a noticeable shift since the turn of the century. Within the organization, women represent more than half of senior leadership; 65% of overall staff identify as women.

The Great Women Painters collaboration between Kering and Phaidon follows successful partnerships on Great Women Artists (2019) and Woman Made: Great Women Designers (2021). The Great Women series is inspired by the celebrated essay by Linda Nochlin, ‘Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?’ (1971), a seminal text that urged art historians to rethink their approach to unearthing forgotten women artists.

Through the Great Women Painters initiative, Kering continues to strengthen its commitment to women in the arts. Since its creation in 2015, Kering’s Women In Motion has highlighted the creativity and uniqueness of talented women whose work in the fields of arts and culture is helping to transform our vision of the world. This support also manifests through the Kering Foundation, which has been addressing violence against women worldwide for almost 15 years.
