Michael Werner Gallery is pleased to present a selection of works by Per Kirkeby, Markus Lüpertz, A.R. Penck, and Peter Saul for the 2020 Art Basel Miami Beach Online Viewing Room.
Per Kirkeby (1938-2018) is an internationally celebrated Danish painter, sculptor, filmmaker, and author, and his work has been the subject of many major museum retrospectives worldwide. An exhibition of his bronze sculptures is currently on display at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek, and another exhibition of his paintings and bronzes opened this week at Michael Werner Gallery, East Hampton.
Painter and sculptor Markus Lüpertz (b. 1941, Liberec, Bohemia) has been exhibiting his work internationally for over fifty years. Important recent retrospective surveys have been shown at Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.; The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.; and Haus der Kunst, Munich. An exhibition of his recent paintings will open at Michael Werner Gallery, London in 2021. Lüpertz lives and works in Berlin, Karlsruhe, Düsseldorf, and Florence.
A.R. Penck (1939-2017) is one of the most influential artists to emerge from the post-war period. Born Ralf Winkler in Dresden, East Germany, he adopted the pseudonym “A.R. Penck” in 1968 to counter his recurring difficulties with East German authorities and to be able to show his work in West Germany. A.R. Penck has been the subject of many major museum retrospectives worldwide, most recently in the exhibition A.R. Penck: How It Works which was on view at Gemeentemuseum, The Hague earlier this year.
Peter Saul (b. 1934, San Francisco, California) has exhibited his work internationally for sixty years. His works are found in numerous museum collections. Recent exhibitions have been held at the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt; Les Abattoirs, Toulouse; and Le Delta, Namur. The critically acclaimed retrospective Crime and Punishment is currently on view at the New Museum, New York until next year. Saul lives and works in Germantown, New York.
