NANZUKA is pleased to present two exhibitions of new works by Chicago-based American artist Hebru Brantley: “Mythos Opus Pt. 2” at NANZUKA 2G and “Mythos Opus Pt. 3” at 3110NZ. In addition, a solo show with Brantley, “Mythos Opus Pt. 1,” will be presented concurrently from October 29 at MEGUMI OGITA Gallery.
Hebru Brantley was born in Chicago, USA. He earned a B.A. in Film from Clark Atlanta University and has a background in design and media illustration. Brantley currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
Brantley creates narrative-driven work revolving around his conceptualized iconic characters, which are utilized to address complex ideas around nostalgia, the mental psyche, power, and hope. The color palettes, pop-art motifs, and characters themselves create accessibility around Brantley’s layered and multifaceted beliefs. Drawing major influence from the South Side of Chicago’s AfriCOBRA movement in the 1960s and 70s, he uses the lineage of mural and graffiti work as a frame to explore his inquiries, employing a plethora of mediums from oil, acrylic, watercolor and spray paint to non-traditional mediums such as coffee and tea in his practice. His work challenges the traditional view of the hero or protagonist and insists on a contemporary and distinct narrative that impacts and instills viewers with new perspectives.
The exhibition at NANZUKA 2G presents an inquiry into the idea of ‘manhood’ through the appropriation of famous American figures. By utilizing the iconography of characters such as Batman and Robin, the path of adolescence to adulthood and what that journey brings about is explored. In our current cultural system, the perception and expectation of masculinity itself is changing due to changes in the correlation between leadership roles and hyper masculinity. With this exhibition viewers are challenged to question where we are in the perception of who the hero is. Who are our leaders, who should we follow, and why?
The exhibition at 3110NZ explores the idea of emancipation and the nature of freedom. In two of the works, Brantley’s characters are seen with arms folded, firmly standing their ground. In another two works, his characters are seen soaring with momentum, purpose and determination. Together they challenge the viewer to contemplate the idea of freedom and change. They explore the notion of waiting for change versus being the change within the world that one wishes to see.
In correspondence to the exhibition, apparel items produced by Proom the world in collaboration with Hebru Brantley, will be released at 2G. In addition, “Flynamic duo,” a limited edition of 200 soft vinyl figures produced by Brantley, will also be available to purchase via lottery.
