CARLOCINQUE GALLERY is delighted to present “myoptiks” by Peter Campus, on display from October 3 to December 6, 2023.

Over the past two decades, Peter Campus, a pioneer in American video art, has devoted his work to capturing the extraordinary natural beauty of the southern coast of Long Island. All the works featured in the “myoptiks” exhibition were created in the vicinity of Bellport. There, the artist carefully positioned his camera in selected locations along the coast, recording hundreds of hours. In his video works, time unfolds, light transforms, and the air moves, gradually capturing the subtle changes in the landscape. There is no sudden revelation; instead, small changes over time accumulate, creating a unique visual experience.

In this series of works, Peter Campus draws inspiration from the artistic philosophy of Dr. Ananda Coomaraswamy, a Ceylonese metaphysician who served as the curator of Indian art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts from 1917 to 1947. Paraphrasing Coomaraswamy’s concepts, Campus emphasizes that while contemporary art often captures a moment in time, a more meditative art seeks to represent a continuous condition, approaching the “Tao” or the very source of things.

Peter Campus’s art skillfully leverages the gap between human perception, the camera’s recording, and the artist’s vision. This project showcases Campus’s mastery as a video artist and his ability to capture the subtle and ever-evolving beauty of nature through a contemporary and meditative lens. Campus’s works invite viewers to contemplate the intrinsic beauty of reality and its connection to the essence of things.

The “myoptiks” exhibition highlights Peter Campus’s ability to challenge perception and make us reflect on the relationship between what we see, what a camera can capture, and what an artist brings to the forefront.
