Empty Gallery is pleased to present نور (pronounced ‘nour’), Iranian-American artist Raha Raissnia’s first solo exhibition in East Asia. Raissnia’s multivalent practice incorporates painting, film, and performance often exploring the complex negotiation between indexical traces of so-called documentary realism and the noumenal realm. Drawing its title from a Persian word denoting light, نور brings together an interwoven constellation of recent paintings and moving image installations, expanding on a body of work presented as part of Greater New York at MoMA PS1 in 2021.

Layering and tweaking pre-existing material such as her own drawings, photographs, and film footage, Raissnia composes through assemblage and erasure. Her idiosyncratic syntax of architectural, natural and technological forms construct multilayered somewheres that traverse past and present, memory and imagination, transient moments and the accretion of time.
