Bonhams auction house in London is set to showcase a collection of sculptures by Italian artist Rembrandt Bugatti as part of its 20th/21st Century Art sale. The exhibition, to be held at Bonhams New Bond Street, will feature three notable big cat sculptures by the renowned animal sculptor.
The centerpiece of the Bugatti collection is a walking leopard sculpture, estimated at £220,000 – 350,000. Accompanying this are a standing leopard, valued between £180,000 and £250,000, and a seated panther, expected to fetch £150,000 – 200,000. These works exemplify Bugatti’s exceptional skill in capturing the essence and movement of exotic animals.
Bugatti, known for his unique approach to sculpting, often worked directly in front of his subjects at zoos in Paris and Antwerp. His technique allowed him to portray animals with remarkable lifelike qualities, focusing on their most expressive gestures. Panthers, in particular, held a special place in Bugatti’s work, as he found them more natural and less aggressive than humans.
The auction will also feature works by other prominent artists. A painting by Bridget Riley titled “Myrrh” is expected to be a highlight, with an estimate of £1,500,000 – £2,500,000. Other notable pieces include works by Anish Kapoor, Robert Rauschenberg, and Tom Wesselmann.
Following the main event, Bonhams will host a day sale featuring additional artworks. This sale includes pieces by Frank Auerbach, Banksy, Pablo Picasso, and Piet Mondrian, among others. The range of artists represented spans various periods and styles within 20th and 21st-century art.
The Bugatti sculptures and other artworks will be available for viewing prior to the auction. Potential buyers and art enthusiasts will have the opportunity to examine these pieces, which represent significant works from various periods of modern and contemporary art.
The 20th/21st Century Art sale is scheduled for April 2, with the day sale following on April 3, both at Bonhams New Bond Street, London.
