Fergus McCaffrey is honored to present Richard Serra: Drawings, opening at the gallery’s Tokyo location on Saturday, June 20, 2020. Created in Richard Serra’s studio in Orient, New York, the Orient series epitomizes the artist’s longstanding concerns with weight, process, and the sheer force of verbal and corporeal orientation.
Marking his first exhibition in Japan in nearly two decades, accompanied by a comprehensive bilingual catalogue, a series of forthcoming short films, and an extensive program of virtual events, the presentation showcases Japanese aesthetic’s influence on Serra. As the artist notes in his 2001 Belknap Lecture at Princeton University, “Kyoto defined my way of seeing.”
