Salon 94 Design proudly presents “BACKSTAGE,” a captivating exhibition showcasing the latest creations from Rick Owens Furniture. This innovative collection, meticulously produced by Owens’ partner Michèle Lamy, pushes the boundaries of furniture design with its use of rare and unexpected materials.
The exhibition is a testament to Owens’ distinctive dark, minimalist aesthetic, which has become his signature since he first began crafting bespoke furniture for his bunker-style Los Angeles loft. Drawing inspiration from the fluid shapes found in nature, the sculptural works of Constantin Brâncuși, and the dynamic contours of California skate parks, each piece in the collection tells a story of artistic vision and masterful craftsmanship.
Lamy’s exceptional talent for sourcing and repurposing unique materials takes center stage in this exhibition. From porphyry and bois de marais (swamp wood) to more conventional elements like plywood and white marble, the furniture pieces showcase an expanding vocabulary of textures and forms. Perhaps most intriguing is Lamy’s global scavenging approach, which has led her from European swamps to Vatican stone quarries, and even to local butcher shops in search of bones – all in pursuit of the perfect materials.
A highlight of “BACKSTAGE” is the debut of the Tech Glade, an evolution of the original modular Glade structure. This innovative design, developed in collaboration with Travis Scott for his CIRCUS MAXIMUS world tour, represents a fusion of functionality and avant-garde aesthetics. Personally overseen by Lamy, in partnership with the Rick Owens Furniture atelier and Xtine Dallas, the Tech Glade is a 10-piece modular marvel. It seamlessly integrates a large-screen TV space, a recording studio, and a cocoon-like sofa beneath a brooding canopy, complete with practical features like phone-charging stations.
This exhibition marks another milestone in Salon 94 Design’s decade-long collaboration with Rick Owens Furniture. From their first show at the flagship space on 94th Street to this current presentation at the gallery’s new headquarters, the partnership continues to evolve and inspire. Art enthusiasts and design aficionados alike will find themselves immersed in a world where furniture transcends its utilitarian purpose to become a form of sculptural art.
As you wander through the exhibition, you’ll feel the raw energy and creative vision that defines Rick Owens’ work. Each piece challenges conventional notions of furniture design, inviting viewers to reconsider the boundaries between art, functionality, and lived experience.
“BACKSTAGE” runs from January 9 to February 15, 2025, at Salon 94 Design in New York, alongside concurrent shows from Takuro Kuwata and Miles Greenberg.
