Fergus McCaffrey Tokyo. On View: November 1 – December 21, 2019. Opening Reception: Friday, November 1, 6–8PM
Fergus McCaffrey is delighted to present Jasper Johns: Usuyuki, an exhibition of prints and drawings by the celebrated American artist from his eponymous Usuyuki series, opening at the gallery’s Tokyo location.
Produced between 1979 and 2004, the Usuyuki series is composed of four paintings, fifteen drawings, and five prints, nine of which are on-view in the upcoming presentation. Derived from Johns’s long-standing admiration for Japan that began while he was stationed in Sendai during the Korean War, the word usuyuki, which translates to “thin or light snow,” conveys the idea of transience; a sudden arrival and, subsequently, unexpected departure. This presentation points to the artist’s exploration of impermanence and renewal inherent to the term, reflecting the profound influence of Japanese culture on Johns’s life.
