Warhol’s Muhammad Ali Screenprints Pack A Punch At Bonhams Prints Sale

Los Angeles – A complete set of four screenprints by Andy Warhol of the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali lead Bonhams’ Prints & Multiples sale on September 29. The set has an estimate of $180,000 – 250,000.

The sale will also include Andy Warhol’s screenprint Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn), which has an estimate of $80,000 – 120,000, as well as four Warhol screenprints of Mao, offered as individual lots, each estimated at $30,000 – 50,000.

Bonhams West Coast Director of Prints & Multiples, Morisa Rosenberg, commented: “Warhol’s bold and instantly recognizable pop art prints are proving as popular as ever. Warhol’s screenprints have achieved particularly impressive results at Bonhams in recent months, and we are very pleased that he is so well-represented in the sale alongside a vast array of Old Master and Contemporary prints.”

In May, a screenprint of Mick Jagger, from the Mick Jagger Portfolio by Andy Warhol sold for $93,825 at Bonhams Los Angeles – a world record for the print. There was further success for one of Warhol’s celebrity prints at Bonhams New York in June, where a Warhol signed lithograph of Elizabeth Taylor, entitled Liz, sold for $75,075.

Other highlights of the sale include:

  • Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Femme Au Fauteuil No. 1 (Le Manteau Polonais). Estimate: $60,000 – 80,000.
  • After John James Audubon (1785-1851), Roseate Spoonbill (Pl. CCCXXI). Estimate: $60,000 – 80,000.
  • Marc Chagall (1887-1985), Paris de la Fenêtre. Estimate: $24,000 – 28,000.
