Sydney – Thursday 28 July, 2022. The Sydney Opera House today announced that critically acclaimed American author and humourist David Sedaris returns to the renewed Concert Hall for one night only in February 2023, as part of a highly anticipated national Australian tour.
Following the roaring success of his latest New York Times best-seller, Happy-Go-Lucky, audiences will be treated to a hilarious evening of insightful storytelling (including previously unpublished work) and piercing observation with one of the greatest satirists of our time. The night will include audience Q&A and epic book signing, for which Sedaris is renowned.
In Happy-Go-Lucky, Sedaris unleashes his trademark sardonic wit to capture the unexpected, poignant – and hilarious – moments of the pandemic, mercilessly skewering the foibles of our fellow human beings, while at the same time expressing beautifully our very human need for connection with each other. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemism and the absurdity of everyday life has earned him a reputation as a savant of satire and one of our most observant writers. The book debuted at number one on The New York Times non-fiction best-seller list and has remained on the list for 7 weeks and counting.
“We have been sorely missing David’s voice and presence on our stages these past years,” says Sydney Opera House Head of Talks and Ideas, Chip Rolley. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome him back to our renewed Concert Hall for one unmissable night. Sedaris is one of the great writing talents of our time – a singular voice and unique vision that never fails to make us notice what we might have carelessly missed and see our world anew. His fans in Sydney are legion and are in for a real treat with this one-night-only show.”
“The happy-go-unlucky Sedaris is forever being frustrated, humiliated or downright annihilated, and the mishaps he chronicles probably explain why readers feel so fondly protective towards him.”
The Guardian
Throughout his career, Sedaris has penned many collections of personal essays, including Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls; and diaries, including Theft By Finding, Carnival of Snackery, and The Best of Me. Sedaris’ pieces appear regularly in The New Yorker and have twice been included in “The Best American Essays.” There are over ten million copies of his books in print and they have been translated into 25 languages.
He and his sister, comedian and actress Amy Sedaris, have collaborated under the name “The Talent Family” and have written half-a-dozen plays produced in New York City. His original radio pieces can be heard on the public radio show and highly successful podcast, This American Life. Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. Since 2011, he can be heard annually on a series of live recordings on the BBC Radio 4 program, “Meet David Sedaris.”
David Sedaris will also tour Melbourne, Hobart, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, and Brisbane. Visit davidsedarisbooks.com for more info.
