What’s it about?
Well, in the middle of a sumptuous wedding, a planet called Melancholia crashes into Earth.
Plot and Inner Metaphor
It is a difficult film, in which we are presented with the relationship between personal and universal harmony, between what is internal and what blows up inside us, which will give rise to an external blossoming. Little by little it wins you over, but it is another Trier film that will make you wonder if this apparent harmony, order and cosmic balance really exist or if they are a mere invention of a cosmic scriptwriter who has had a little too much to drink.
Aesthetically very elegant, with Kirsten Dunst playing her role to perfection (plus some of Trier’s regulars, such as Charlotte Gainsbourg, who stars in Nymphomaniac). A reflection on beauty, weirdness, truth and deception, about the hell of the cosmos, its grandeur and the spiritual elevation towards the non-infinite that our own essence sets out for us.
It is a 2011 film, reminiscent (still) of Dogma.

We like this kind of cinema, and this kind of vision.
Science and life, existence…
And gravity. Inescapable.
Maybe the only salvation is… art.
You might like it or you might not not… but Lars von Trier is an artist.
