NEW YORK— The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) has announced two virtual AIPAD Talks in collaboration with Aperture on April 27 and May 6, 2022. AIPAD Talks + Aperture celebrates the Spring issue of Aperture magazine entitled Celebrations and the organization’s new upcoming book Object Benson: On the Influence of Richard Benson.
The talks lead up to The Photography Show presented by AIPAD to be held from May 20 through 22, with a VIP preview on May 19. The Show will be held at a new midtown location: Center415 on Fifth Avenue between 37th and 38th streets.

Myriam Boulos: What’s Ours
Based in Beirut, Myriam Boulos, now a Magnum-nominee, has created a searing, diaristic body of work portraying her friends, family, and her city’s society with startling energy and intimacy. Her series, “What’s Ours,” featured in Aperture magazine’s spring issue titled “Celebrations” casts an unflinching eye on the revolution that began in Lebanon in 2019, with protests against corruption and government austerity, as well as the aftermath of the devastating port explosion in August 2020. Of her approach to photography, Boulos states: “It’s more of a need than a choice. I obsess about things and I don’t know how to deal with these obsessions in any other way but photography.” The talk will be introduced by Michael Famighetti, editor, Aperture magazine.

Object Benson: On the Influence of Richard Benson
Aperture’s forthcoming book Object Benson: On the Influence of Richard Benson pays homage to a legendary figure whose name is synonymous with the evolving history and philosophy of photographic reproduction. As an expert printer, teacher, and dean of the Yale School of Art, Benson inspired over three decades of students and artisans through his mentorship and work. Lois Conner, artist and educator; Miko McGinty, coeditor of the book and designer; Sarah Meister, executive director of Aperture; and Sarah Stolfa, CEO and artistic director of TILT Institute for the Contemporary Image, and curator of a show drawn from the material in the book, will discuss the ways in which Benson inspired their practices as educators and artists.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Myriam Boulos was born in 1992 in Lebanon. At the age of 16 she started to use her camera to explore Beirut, its people, and her place among them. She graduated with a master’s degree in photography from Alba in 2015. Her work has been exhibited in both national and international exhibitions, including Infinite identities, Amsterdam, 3ème biennale des photographes du monde arabe, Paris, and C’est Beyrouth, Paris. Today she uses photography to explore, defy and question society. In 2021 she was awarded the Grand Prix ISEM, and she joined Magnum.
Mona Eltahawy is the acclaimed writer of Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution (2015), and founder of the newsletter Feminist Giant.
Lois Conner is an American photographer and the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, New York State Council on the Arts Fellowship, and National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. Publications of her work include China (2000), Beijing: Contemporary and Imperial (2014), and Lotus Leaves (2018). Conner has held teaching positions at Yale School of Art, Princeton University, and Sarah Lawrence College.
Miko McGinty has been designing art books since 1993. She founded and directs her own graphic design firm in Brooklyn as principal designer. McGinty has worked with a range of artists, museums, and publishers on publications and exhibitions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Yale University Art Gallery, Asia Society, the Studio Museum, and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. She is a lecturer at MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she teaches book design.
Sarah Meister is executive director of Aperture, following more than 25 years at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, where she curated numerous exhibitions, including Fotoclubismo: Brazilian Modernist Photography, 1946–1964 (2021), Dorothea Lange: Words & Pictures (2020), and Making Space: Women Artists and Postwar Abstraction (cocurator, 2017). Meister’s newest initiative is the Aperture PhotoBook Club, a series of virtual conversations that consider the photobook as a platform for contemporary creative expression.
Sarah Stolfa is CEO and artistic director of TILT Institute for the Contemporary Image in Philadelphia (formerly the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center). Her photographs were published in the monograph The Regulars (2009). She is a lecturer at Stuart Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania.
