  • An Important English Private Collection Set to be Auctioned Across Eight Sales at Sotheby’s this Summer
  • Led by an Exquisite Landscape by Monet & a Jewel-Like Ballet Scene by Degas Alongside Standout Paintings by Pissarro, Tissot & Millais

“This collection is a vision of Arcadia – an idyllic view of Europe’s cultural landscape, from the exquisite English silver beautifully displayed on the English and French furniture, the magical Tissots and Millais to the magnificent Monet and the Impressionists. It is very rare to find such a collection, each part distinguished by the best works of their kind, harmonious in quality and importance. Displaying paintings by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro and Degas alongside their British contemporaries in a quintessentially English setting brings fresh insight into the radical inventiveness of French painting in the late 19th century, and reinforces the truly international appeal of Impressionist art.”

Thomas Boyd-Bowman, Head of Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sales, Sotheby’s London

‘A Vision of Arcadia’ follows in the tradition of the grand and great collections of the 19th century, bringing together museum-quality works, from Victorian and Impressionist masters to exceptional English silver and wonderful furniture from across Europe and the golden age of cabinetmaking. Many of these pieces come with a fascinating provenance, their life associated with the great houses and families of England, historic figures, magnificent European collections and the revered gallerists of La Belle Epoch in Paris.

Some seventy lots will be offered across eight auctions at Sotheby’s London, including the dedicated Jubilee and Modern & Contemporary art evening sales. They include a quintessential landscape of Vétheuil by Monet, one of Degas’s finest pastel over monotype depictions of the ballet, a portrait of Millais’ daughter and a view of Tissot’s London garden, together with important Regency-era silver.

Highlights will be exhibited in New York (11-17 May), Taipei (26-27 May) and Hong Kong (4-7 June) prior to the pre-sale exhibitions in London.
