Bert Green Fine Art is pleased to present a guest-curated exhibition of the work of Deirdre Sullivan-Beeman, curated by Alix Sloan of Sloan Fine Art in Los Angeles, and in the project room, Jesse Howard will debut his first stone lithograph limited edition print, our second solo show of the artist.

Deirdre Sullivan-Beeman is a contemporary surrealist painter born out of the 3rd Wave of Feminism. She came into her own in Los Angeles in the 1990s alongside cultural movements like Riot Grrrl, Queercore, and DIY. As a self- taught artist, Sullivan-Beeman utilizes many DIY ethics and methods. Her paintings employ the history and lore of the “girl” in empowering femininity. The iconography and simulacra in her transcendental works reflect her view of the world and have metaphorical meaning through investigation of identity, gender, otherworldly narratives, and mythical animal personas, which she paints using a modified oil and egg tempera Renaissance technique. Sullivan-Beeman lives and works in Los Angeles, CA, and Vancouver, Canada. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, including KP Projects (Merry Karnowsky Gallery) in Los Angeles, CA; Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco, CA; WMOCA, Wausau, WI: The Belskie Museum of Art & Science in Closter, NJ; Greg Moon Art in Taos, NM; Merlino Galleria d’Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy; Galerie Bruno Massa in Paris, France. She has been named a Finalist in the Imaginative Realism category by the Art Renewal Center three times.

Jesse Howard is a Chicago native who has observed the rhythms and nuances of African American cultural life in Chicago over many decades. His artworks are portraits and figurative typologies meant to document and celebrate the rich variety of individual and collective expressions, showing the good, the bad, the beautiful, and the ugly. At the core of this work is a deeply felt, powerful pronouncement of the human spirit. The exhibition is the debut and initial release of his first limited edition, multi-plate stone lithograph print, published by Bert Green Fine Art and TC Editions in Chicago. The print will be displayed along with several of his original drawings.
