The Longest Night. Netflix Series – Review

The Longest Night (La Noche Más Larga) is a Spanish psychological thriller in series format created by Víctor Sierra y Xosé Morais. Starring Alberto Ammann y Luis Callejo.

Synopsis

The Longest Night is a 6 episode series set on Christmas Eve, in a psychiatric prison, where the serial killer, Simon Lago is being held in custody overnight prior to appearing before the judge the following day.

In order to prevent him from appearing in court, a group of armed men gather to storm the ward and get Simon Lago out of there. Mayhem ensues, involving the armed intruders, patients in ward, and the guards who try to quash the revolt and violence. This is where the other main character, the chief warden, plays a big role in the story, as he finds himself in a bind while trying to regain control of the prison. He is told his daughter has been kidnapped by someone on the outside working for Simon the serial killer. What a conundrum.

The motivation behind all those machinations to prevent the psycho from testifying is the key question.

Our Review

As with many other series in all genres, this one follows a formulaic structure. If the recipe works, why not apply it with slight alterations? With a couple of interesting characters on which it builds various plots, it is a psychological thriller, that is both suspenseful and action ridden. We do, however, expect that there will be a next season, as it does not give us that closure in the end of the series that us humans need.

Sit back, and enjoy the thrill and mind puzzles it offers its audience!
