That’s Amor is a romantic comedy directed by Shaun Paul Piccinino and it stars Riley Dandy and Isaac Gonzalez Rossi.
A predictable yet entertaining, lighthearted rom-com.
Plot
Sofia’s life falls apart in just one day: she is fired from the job; she catches her boyfriend cheating on her; she breaks an ankle, and that is the start of a new adventure as she is forced to move back in with her mother, who tries to cheer her up by keeping her busy. One of the many activities is taking a cooking class at El Corazon, a Spanish restaurant, where charming and suave Matías works. Sofia´s life journey is about to start a new chapter involving food making and a new dalliance.
Review
Structural in its premise, it is something we have seen before, then again, it is a formula that always works. Had this movie been produced a couple of decades ago, I envision Meg Ryan or Julia Roberts taking on the role as Sofia, and there would, of course, be a higher budget allocated to the movie production. But those days in Hollywood are long gone, and now Netflix is in charge of feel-good rom-coms. Riley Dandy does a good job in the part as Sofia. She is knows how to act with authenticity, and does have that comedic spark that so befits this genre.
Of course, it plays on tropes, with their simplistic portrayal of the Spanish as passionate and exotic – with the simpatico characters, tortillas, and the celebration of San Juan (summer solstice). But, what can we say to that other than c‘est la vie, this is a run-of-the-mill production.
Predictable, simpatico, and inoffensive. It does have amusing elements, making it watchable.
