Loving Adults is a thriller directed by Barbara Topsøe-Rothenborg, starring Lars Ranthe, Dar Salim y Sonja Richter.

A thriller that is stylistically different. It is based on the Nordic noir novel by Anna Ekberg.

Premise

On the surface they are a happily married couple, but beneath that layer there are lies, betrayals and crimes simmering.

Review

As a thriller that revolves around a dysfunctional marriage, and is based on a Nordic noir novel, you can expect a more realistic approach in this fictional work.

The characters are well defined and are more convincing than in most thrillers we have seen on Netflix. It has a distinct Nordic trait, which comes across as more sincere and natural in its portrayal of the characters. That being said, and perhaps due to the saturated offer of thrillers using this identical theme, that of a failed marriage, the movie oscillates from being original in its form, to being slow and heavy at times, and intriguing at others.

Is it novel? In a way it is, considering the platform it is being streamed on. It does differ from many of the movies on offer, and although it is not a masterpiece, we do appreciate that something is provided to a more grown audience.

It is not a movie that will get standing ovations, and as a whole this film has its clear pros and cons, one of the cons being that it takes too long to come full circle. The highlights of this movie are the performances and the good camerawork, although the latter aspect also varies in quality throughout the movie – some scenes are more carefully crafted than others.

The literary ballast is clear in this movie, and it is apparent in its narrative form. It is a good adaptation of the novel by Anna Ekberg, and will probably be an enjoyable viewing experience for the Nordic noir fans.

Loving Adults has many highlights, and some low points, but if you are looking for a movie that is somewhat different and efficient in its storytelling, you might like it.

Our Opinion

Despite its varying tempo, it manages to narrate a thriller in a innovative way. Very literary in form, it has a different rhythm than a traditional Hollywood production.

Lastly, considering the catalogue of movies on offer on the streaming platform, it is a good option if you want to see something “new”.
