The Empress (Die Kaiserin) is a 2022 German series directed by Katharina Eyssen, who has affirmed this is a more realistic version of the story of Sissi. It is based on the historical romantic novel by Gigi Griffis. This series stars Devrim Lingnau, Philip Froissant, Melika Foroutan and Svenja Jung.

A period piece that takes us back to 19th century Austria, and gives us a new take on Elisabeth von Wittelsbach. You can count on a well produced TV series.

Premise

About the Series

The Empress (2022)

This is a six part series, of approximately 45 minutes each in duration. It is really well produced, and brings us a new adaptation of the story of Sissi, part which is wonderfully played by the new talent Devrim Lingnau. The performance of Philip Froissant, in his role as Franz Joseph, is also commendable.

With a screenplay that adapts a contemporary novel chronicling the young protagonist’s journey, it still maintains the style and tone of 19th century English (it is dubbed, translated from German). Speaking of the dubbing, in this case we are happy to say that it is, this time around, well carried out.

The cinematography is good, and it is overall a well crafted TV series. With good atmospherics, fantastic costume design and sets – the sets give us a glimpse of the opulent Viennese rococo (18th century decor and architecture), as well as the more impoverished areas in Vienna of the era.

Our Opinion

We recommend this series to fans of period pieces and of romantic stories with brave protagonists. It counts on really good cinematography, costume designs and sets. And last but not least, the good performances of the voice actors behind did the dubbing, which will allow you to enjoy all the more this well produced series.
