High Water (Wielka woda) is a series directed by Jan Holoubek and Bartlomiej Ignaciuk.

A really good series on Netflix if you are in the mood for something more serious than what we are accustomed to.

Premise

The year is 1997, and the Pontiff is visiting his country of birth, which is a big event. Then a massive problem arises: it is a time of drought, somebody predicts an imminent rise in the water levels and a flood as a result, which will sweep over several small towns.

About the Series

This is a series that takes itself very seriously, and no wonder given the outcome of the events. This is not to be taken lightly, and whomever might want to be facetious about it will find that it is moral, different, it has very well defined characters, stories for grown ups who have to make decisions. It has plenty of fascinating topics concerning a new democracy, freedom of the press, politics and social order. Basically, it is a series to be taken seriously, covering a number of issues with the gravity they require, and applying a narrative to match.

Due to all this, ‘High Water’ does not intend to be an aesthetically captivating show. It does have some good takes and shots, true, it is filmed with a good tempo and some creativity, true, but the story takes front row in this production, placing most of the weight on a well elaborated script.

Our Opinion

A good series that seeks to be taken seriously rather than to entertain. Very involved in the topic and one might even say that to the point of becoming polemic on an issue that, although being tackled locally, has repercussions far beyond the borders.
