Jumping from High Places (Per lanciarsi dalle stelle) is a 2022 dramedy movie directed by Andrea Jublin. The screenplay is written by Alice Urciuolo.

It is a dramedy, without over the top drama, nor extraordinary comedy.

Premise

A young woman with anxiety disorder, and having reached 25 years of age, tries to build a life, and a romantic relationship in a small Italian town.

Movie Review

Well, there’s no accounting for taste, and we can assure you that we love Italian cinema and its variety, ranging from Fellini, appreciating Rossellini, and while we are at it we might as well refer to something more contemporary, and say that we like the endearing  Roberto Benigni. However, ‘Jumping from High Places’ is not quite “that” type of Italian film. True enough, Italy is the cradle of the Renaissance, and we understand that they are proud of that fact, but this movie does not strike us for its Mannerist style, read lack thereof, nor its auric sense of existence.

That said, if you are in search of an easy romantic dramedy, simple in its premise, dramatic at times, and even sentimental, sweet and intimate, give this movie a shot, because you just might enjoy it.

The idea is not particularly original, and it will probably not get much attention nor a spot on the shelf of the greats. It is a feature that is to be watched and not reflected on, hence will inevitably be forgotten soon after being viewed. Definitely formulaic, it is a repetition of what we have seen, evoking in the spectators a feeling of familiarity and innocuous relatability that will allow them to disconnect watching this pastime movie.

It does have its highlights, all of them derived from it being the formula based production it is, navigating the seriousness of the situation with the comedic of the romance the protagonist pursues. Of course, we cannot but be on the protagonist’s side as she lends herself to be liked – I mean, it is a romantic dramedy, hardly the genre mashup to have an unlikable lead character.

With ‘Jumping from High Places’ we leave behind the Italian classics of Cinecittà, and move on to a “summertime” movie that being as harmless as it is might appeal to many; they will be somewhat entertained.

Our Opinion

It entertains, but it does not win us over. It is like going on a nice date that begins and ends in pleasant small-talk over an acceptable dinner. It will not leave a mark in our forlorn hearts that now belong to the streaming platforms.
