Movie review
Step aside ‘Harry Potter’, ‘The school for Good and Evil’ is here to grab a piece of the pie of the YA fantasy genre. This might become the Netflix hit of the year amongst this demographic group.
Adapted to appeal to contemporary audiences, it is an interesting mesh that evokes timelessness, mixing 18th century costumes, medieval sets (especially the architecture), with a modern script and soundtrack.
The storyline follows the classic fairy tale structure, with a narrator, performed by Cate Blanchett, introducing us to the story and guiding the viewers through the transitions in the premise. It has plenty of well portrayed magical characters and beings, thanks to the good CGI and special effects, that will enthrall fantasy fans, and of course, there is the epic fight of good versus evil with all the nuances that lie therein.
It counts on an excellent cast, with Hollywood veterans like Charlize Theron and Lawrence Fishburne, as well as the great Ben Kingsley. The new talents Sophia Anne Caruso and Sofia Wylie take on the protagonist roles well and fittingly for this movie, with the right amount of thespian license.
Our Opinion
We are betting that this will be a hit amongst the YA audiences, as it is both entertaining and well produced. Mix Tolkien, the Grimm brothers, Roald Dahl, Dickens, add CGI, and you have a good fairy tale in movie format. In the case of ‘The School for Good and Evil’, there is also a good soundtrack in the mix. Might the Harry Potter monopoly be challenged?
