All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen nichts Neues) is a movie directed by Edward Berger, starring Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch and Aaron Hilmer. It is based on the 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque.

A remarkable production that is impressive, overwhelming and hellish.

Premise

Paul Baumer and his friends Albert and Muller, egged on by romantic dreams of heroism, voluntarily enlist in the German army. Full of excitement and patriotic fervor, the boys enthusiastically march into a war they believe in. But once on the Western Front, they discover the soul-destroying horror of World War I.

Movie Review

A movie that dives in right from the first scenes: war is ending and fighting makes little sense, if it ever did. The negotiations however, know of pride and senselessness. Once on the front, consciousness whispers to one what one already knows, you are going to die there, and if not you, your dreams certainly will.

This is a magnificent movie, that undeniably impresses its very clear message. Beyond the message in the movie (which we completely agree with) it is a brutal cinematographic piece that manages to relay with the script, imagery and the silent moments of solitude, the absurdity of the entire scenario… the human misery, and the suffocating trap of the trenches.

Here we have a small wonder of a movie brought to us by Netflix. If you are in the mood to watch a movie that is masterfully produced, based on a classic that seems to never get old, unfortunately, and be left impacted, ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ is the movie for you.

Note though, it is too a movie of extreme beauty and that has deep faith in mankind. The landscapes are somber, dark, terrifying but it also knows how to reach the spectator and tell the truth of the absurdity and pointlessness of war.
