The Accursed is a 2022 horror movie directed by Kevin Lewis, starring Mena Suvari, Meg Foster and Alexis Knapp.
Premise
Elly’s trip to Haiti is cancelled last minute, and is then asked by a family friend to spend a few days looking after an elderly woman living in a remote cabin. The cabin turns out to be anything but relaxing as Elly begins hallucinating in ways that blur reality with her dreams. As the visions take over, Elly realizes that she was lured there by a demonic presence hiding inside of the woman just waiting to break free.
Movie Review
If you are gearing up for Halloween, and feel witchy, ‘The Accursed’ might just be what you are looking for. As a movie it has a decent narrative structure, a good premise, and ideal horror movie scenography, and tempo.
Despite being a limited budget movie, it is clear that each take has been carried out with a lot of care, thereby being aesthetically acceptable with regards to its photography and the special effects.
The storyline grabs you form the start, with an impactful sequence – through, a bit hokey, but we acknowledge the limited resources – then, it slows down in tempo, leaning on the score and sound effects, such as creaking staircases and doors, to create the suspense, until the second half when things start to get more scary and ultimately culminates.
It is true that it is stereotypical of a horror movie, with the perfect protagonist, however, this can been carried out better or worse, and in this case despite the slightly hokey effects, it all turns out moderately well.
Our Opinion
An entertaining piece that by no means convinces us fully, but as said, entertains. It does have a relatively good premise, and interlaces horror movie tropes unapologetically.
