Netflix will be streaming the first season of the sitcom set in the last standing Blockbuster Video in the U.S. The series is created by Vanessa Ramos, and stars Randall Park, Melissa Fumero and Madeleine Arthur.
Premise
After learning he is operating the last Blockbuster Video in America, Timmy Yoon and his staff employees (including his long-time crush, Eliza) fight to stay relevant. The only way to succeed is to remind their community that they provide something big corporations can’t: human connection.
First Impressions of the Series
Ok, one of the key requirements in a sitcom is relatability. There has to be a character that inspires sympathy in the spectator, for the latter to feel engaged in the story. Blame it on me, the viewer, but this series is far weaker than expected. The script is bland, as are the characters and their conflicts.
Full of cinematic references, the most striking being “Life isn’t 21 Jump Street, Jimmy!”, which does not save the dialogue, by the way.
Maybe, in time the characters will become more captivating, and the script blossom into a humorous marvel full of unique jests and one liners. There are after all ten episodes to get to know them better and for the story to develop.
