Streaming Hits in 2022: What Each Straming Platform Has to Offer?

As we are getting closer to the year’s end, we have decided to dive into the best shows and movies streaming platforms have to offer. If you want to see the full list, take a look at ExpressVPN’s report on 2022 streaming trends and add these hits to your watchlist.

Here is a quick overview of our favorites:

Amazon Prime

Unquestionably, we must mention the grand premiere of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’, released in September. The much-anticipated series received mixed reviews but managed to reach a massive viewership within the first month, becoming a US streaming hit. Many of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ loyals expressed mixed feelings regarding the series, however, it was praised by many others (top-rated were episodes ‘Udûn’ and 8 ‘Alloyed’).

Furthermore, this first season of the prequel to the ‘The Lord of the Rings’, counted on a budget in the millions; it is estimated to be close to $470 million. Currently, the second season is in the making and is expected to be released in 2024.

Netflix

As you know, this streaming platform has released movies and series aplenty this past season and is very varied in style, format, and genre. Out of all the hits, two productions stand out:

All Quiet on the Western Front’ is the movie that we bet on being a big streaming hit. It is an adaptation of the novel by the same title, and it has impressed critics and viewers. It is said this will be a possible contender for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

The series ‘The Sandman’ managed to become Netflix’s top hit. It is based on the famous comic book series written by Neil Gaiman and counted on a hefty budget as the streaming platform invested approximately $15 million per episode. The reviews have been mostly favorable, but its success is also measured by the viewership, and this series hit record viewings within the first week of streaming. Such was the success of the first season that it has recently been announced that a second season is set to be produced.

HBO Max

This season HBO Max has placed its bets on one game, the prequel to ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘House of the Dragon’, based on the R.R. Martin novels. This series proved to be a massive success following its premiere in August. Very true to the narrative style of Game of Thrones, and the high production quality it was undoubtedly an expected hit, with a budget of around $20 million per episode.

‘House of the Dragon’ pushes the same buttons that led ‘Game of Thrones’ to become a hit series. There is violence, very well-defined characterizations, and plenty of surprise plot twists in this series that will become an emblem of the platform for years to come.

Hulu

There is no question ‘The Bear’ has been this year’s Hulu hit series. This dramedy, or comedy-drama, beat viewership numbers across platforms upon its release in June. It has received very positive reviews and has had the audience hooked. It tells the story of a chef, trained in fine dining, who must return to his hometown of Chicago to run the family business – a sandwich shop – following his brother’s death.

Already in July, ‘The Bear’ was renewed for a second season, which is expected to be released in 2023.

Apple TV+

Our personal favorite from this streaming platform is ‘Causeway’, the drama starring Jennifer Lawrence. We will even dare suggest that it could be a strong contender for an Academy Award or two, considering the superb performances delivered by Lawrence and her co-star Brian Tyree Henry.

The movie might not have been a massive audience success of the likes of the Apple TV+ series ‘Ted Lasso’ or the comedy series ‘Mythic Quest’, but we were so impressed by this feature film produced by A24 (they continuously impress us with good productions) we had to include it in our mentions.

Disney+

Here we have a platform that proves to be more challenging when it comes to picking a favorite. They have successfully broadened their catalogue, providing a good variety of series and movies. After some deliberation, we have concluded that the best offered by this streaming platform is Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Nightmare Alley’, despite it being from 2021.

If we were to pick a 2022 streaming hit on Disney+, we would then go for ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ directed by Taika Waititi. This Marvel movie was a box office hit, but that has not stopped it from receiving a massive viewership via streaming.

And with all this said, we have given you a run-through of the best on the most popular streaming platforms, well-knowing that December premieres are, for obvious reasons, not included. Worry not, for those will be covered in due time.
