Qala is an Indian psychological-drama written and directed by Anvita Dutt Guptan, starring Tripti Dimri.
A slightly different feature film to what Netflix has previously brought to us recently. You can expect a slow-paced movie that tells a very sad story of a tormented celebrity, which is not based on real life events.
Premise
Qala is a talented and accomplished singer, who despite her success is tormented by her past in which her mother, especially, played a quite nefarious role.
Movie Review
A psychological-drama that borders the horror movie line. We follow the protagonist throughout the entire feature, in a story that is slow paced, and very dramatic.
With its good photography, and subdued tones the scene is set for the story of a tormented national superstar (played by Tripti Dimri). Following the character from her childhood, with an overbearing and demanding mother (played by Swastika Mukherjee) to her years as an accomplished singer who suffers a number of mental breakdowns.
‘Qala’ counts on a soundtrack of traditional Hindi music, and unlike other Bollywood productions we have been offered on Netflix, they are actually performed in concerts, with the odd exceptional musically played out scene. This is not a musical such as RRR or Khakee, although music does play a central role in the premise, for obvious reasons.
With the rather good performances, and a good photography it will be to the liking of those seeking a slow-paced drama.
