‘The Recruit’ (2022) – Netflix Thriller Series

The Recruit is a new Netflix series starring Noah Centineo. It is written and created by Alexi Hawley.

Eight episodes of political intrigue and Geo-political machinations through which newbie CIA lawyer/agent has to navigate.

Premise

Owen Hendricks, a fledgling lawyer at the CIA that becomes enmeshed in dangerous international power politics when a former asset threatens to expose the nature of her long-term relationship with the agency unless they exonerate her of a serious crime.

About the Series

One might be conned into thinking that this is a comedy series, despite having been advertised as a thriller, action and adventure series. The initial scenes in the first episode are more reminiscent of The Office (2005-2012) than any other more somber spy themed TV show. The score certainly assists in lightening the mood, with its Get Smart‘ish melodies – however more contemporary.

Noah Centineo plays the kooky, CIA lawyer who is in over his head. The premise follows the basic spy cinema lines, although here we are also given some insight into the protagonist’s humanity with scenes of his personal life. The story unfolds slowly but surely as the new recruit is being trained, and as he ventures on his first mission. The series does grant itself a good dose of creative license, having to add entertainment value to the story. With some amusing scenes, heavy on tropes and clichés, and the photographic quality of a TV production, it might entertain quite a few audience members who seek an easy, action, thriller, with a slightly goofy but likable protagonist.
