‘Jung_E’ (2023) Movie Review: A Thrilling Sci-fi Movie on Netflix

Jung_E is a new sci-fi movie written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho starring Kim Hyun-joo, Kang Soo-youn and Ryu Kyung-Soo. It will be available on Netflix from January 2023.

This is a movie by the new sensation in South Korean filmaking, Yeon Sang-hol, director of Train to Busan and the great Hellbound (there will be a second season of this one). This time, we head for science-fiction with a plot that is like Terminator (directly) or Ex-Machina.

The script has plots that have been more or less “borrowed” from others with the structure of an action film with very good rhythm and effects that are… contradictory. Very good some times in rhythm, sound and above all, editing but sometimes the robots (very much inspired by Terminator) seem to be lacking technology.

However, if you want a futuristic, apocalyptic action film with a good script treatment, Jung-E is a good option for having a good time without too much philosophy. This is a well-made film with well- defined characters in a movie that does not require much depth in the characters and which has a  backdrop of Artificial Intelligence which is quite the fashion now and will be interesting for the spectator.

Do A.I. have rights? It remains to be seen if, as a human creation, they belong or not, or if we can anihilate them when they, surely, betray us. This remains to be seen. Here we still don´t have too much of a problem with that. We have yet to see what they will do and if this future, previsualized in Terminator and which we have again in another approximation are as bad or not. Whether it is James Cameron or Mr. Yeon Sang-ho, I think they will both agree about one thing: do not provide weapons to A.I.

The movie is very entertaining if you let yourself go, sometimes it is attractive because of its very good space shots, the acting is good and it stands out because of its fast rhythm and the good job done by the director, actors… however in the technical aspect this is a movie that has a greater exigency in the CGI than the script and its creator is well aware of that.

A balanced film that doesn´t invent anything new. A very good option to leave your head at home, switch on Netflix and let the A.I.s work instead of us.

Don´t forget to leave your arsenals in the basement in a safe place.
