Unwelcome is a horror movie directed by Jon Wright starring Hannah John-Kamen and Douglas Booth.
A mixture of horror and local bright spots that, as it progresses, stops being “scary” to introduce us to “something else” that, although it will not be that surprising, it is quite interesting.
The creatures that appear will be quite familiar to you (whether or not they resemble the Critters is up to you).
Movie Review
For a B-movie, it has its merits in some places, especially in terms of cinematography. It knows how to maintain its tone of a fable and coherently interconnect the protagonist landscape with the narrative and the personal dramas of each one. The acting is fine, but no one here is exactly going to win an Oscar.
As for the horror story, it gets somewhat blurred as soon as the “protagonists” of the story appear (we will not give any spoilers) and the film takes a tone between horror comedy, fable and… something else.
Worth highlighting the performance of its exceptional leading actress, Hannah John-Kamen, who knows how to maintain the drama of a film that, if it has anything interesting, it is precisely her.
It creates a rather interesting portrait of the localisms, a bit clichéd ‘though, which keeps the story dramatic, although it’s always an obvious crutch for the appearance of the “guests”.
Our Opinion
It is not a film that is going to stand out among this year’s horror productions, but it is a curious and entertaining way, and not much else, to spend the evening.
The Star
Hannah John-Kamen is an English actress best known for her roles in films such as Ready Player One, Ant-Man and the Wasp and Tomb Raider. She is also well known for her television roles in series such as Killjoys and Black Mirror.
John-Kamen began her acting career at a young age performing in stage productions, including a role in Terrence McNally’s Master Class. She made her debut on the big screen in 2011 with the film Albatross, followed by a recurring role in the series Misfits. In 2014 she received recognition for her performance as Dutch on the Canadian science fiction series Killjoys, for which she earned a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress at the Canadian Screen Awards.
