‘Hunger’ (2023). Movie on Netflix. Review: Interesting in its Mystery, without being Seductive

Hunger is a film directed by Sitisiri Mongkolsiri and starring Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying and Nopachai Chaiyanam.

Hunger is an apparently low-key Thai film which lands this Saturday on Netflix, with a very interesting aesthetic and a story to tell.

Plot

A famous chef notices a “street” cook. The girl has talent, and he decides to hire her as part of his select group of assistants to serve the upper class of the country.

But the food holds a secret.

About the Movie

Interesting, to say the least. A movie about cooking served in the form of a thriller with strain spikes and, above all, a good high-contrast photography.

A film that has a clear axis around which the other stories revolve: social differences and injustice. Whether or not to go into social matters, the film raises this issue well, and knows how to distinguish both environments in rhythm as well as in the aesthetic tone.

She, Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying, the actress with a copy-paste surname chosen to move between the two spheres and show them to us, to move and achieve that feeling of strangeness so morbid that produces a film that, on the other hand, could have gone much further in this idea and that, unfortunately, seems to remain in a more or less superficial thriller that aimed great things and that, because of the industry or the market, does not have the guts to do something brutally daring with a subject with which, moreover, others had already succeeded.

Interesting in its aesthetics, it follows the same story of a mysterious and sinister chef as in The Menu in a Ralph Fiennes style.

It knows how to aim rather than to shoot accurately, but the idea is interesting for a Saturday night as with Triangle of Sadness, but without getting your hands too dirty.

Our Opinion

It achieves something in some sequences, but not in the script as a whole. It works half-heartedly, but it knows how to seduce enough with the photography to, at least, give a good picture and be worth it.
