Robots is a romantic comedy written and directed by Casper Christensen and Anthony Hines starring Jack Whitehall and Shailene Woodley.
A valid premise that has been wasted and where absolutely no one seems to be inspired.
Storyline
Two scoundrels in the age of illegal robotics end up chasing their (robotic) doppelgangers in love.
Movie Review
Robots is a romantic comedy that falls short of being both romantic and comedic. While it attempts to make jokes about artificial intelligence, it lacks a sense of humor and originality. However, despite concerns about the automation of thought, it is unlikely to eliminate human beings, but rather those that are deemed useless or invalid.
Sadly, the movie leaves viewers feeling dissatisfied and puzzled, rather than entertained. The humor and pacing fall flat, and the plot could have been more complex and engaging. The film fails to achieve anything beyond being an AI joke, and the line “this generic model can’t generate those answers” falls short of being hilarious.
Robots fails to tug at our heartstrings. While it could be interpreted as a metaphor for the lack of humanity in machines, it is a twisted and questionable proposition. The choice of romantic comedy as a genre seems like an odd decision to achieve its Machiavellian goals.
In summary, Robots is a humorless comedy and a romance devoid of romanticism. Despite having talented actors, such as Jack Whitehall and Shailene Woodley, the script fails to give them the lines needed for a good performance. However, as we are only on version 4 or 4 plus, it is possible that future AIs will be able to fix uninspired works like this one.
Our opinion
There are often alternative options available. The portrayal of “robotic doppelgangers” in romantic comedies may leave something to be desired in terms of emotional depth and complexity.
