Movie Reviews

A throwback buddy action-comedy that offsets its run-of-the-mill sense of humor with a pair of appealing leads.

Tomris Laffly: Variety

A farcical adventure that offers some laughs and a couple creative action sequences. It never reaches the heights of other films in this genre, like Midnight Run or The Rundown, but it’s a fun summer watch.

The speed with which he put together such an assured second film suggests Raiff isn’t quite as soft off-screen as on; and the differences between this performance and the last suggest he’ll have some range as an actor as well.

John DeFore: The Hollywood Reporter

It’s nice to see a filmmaker bring the stars to him instead of straining to reach their level (…) It’s made all the more affecting because Raiff has the patience and maturity to let his characters map their own way forward

Rowan Atkinson Quotes

The older you get, the more you realise how happenstance… has helped to determine your path through life.

People think because I can make them laugh on the stage, I’ll be able to make them laugh in person. That isn’t the case at all. I am essentially a rather quiet, dull person who just happens to be a performer.

Adam Shield, Amp Envelope. The Showroom, London

0

The Showroom presents Amp Envelope, the first solo exhibition in London by artist Adam Shield.

Over the past year Shield has been working on a new body of work, opening up drawing and collage as a means of exploring interior worlds; with imagery encompassing references distilled from post-apocalyptic science fiction writing, to dystopian dream projectors, seventeenth century alchemy and everyday encounters with political, societal and economic structures.

Shield’s recurring motif of a hand-painted grid will wrap around the facade of The Showroom building as the framework for a new collaborative mural; the third iteration of The Showroom Mural Commission. Inside the gallery space Shield will create a spatial collage for audiences to inhabit; an all-encompassing environment further exploring the expansive potential of drawing and print.

Building upon a period of collaborative research in the local neighbourhood, Church Street Library & histories of radical community print groups, an in-situ printmaking workshop in the exhibition space will create the context for a programme of drawing, print and poster-making sessions running on weekends throughout the exhibition, from 19 July to 17 September 2022.

Using drawing as a tool for communication and opening up spaces for critical reflection at times of rapid change, where Church Street is in the midst of major long-term redevelopment, Shield will collaborate with community groups and individuals from The Showroom neighbourhood, leading to the creation of posters of varying scales as an accumulating collage enveloping The Showroom facade. Workshops will invite contributors to amplify their voices; revealing drawing, printmaking and collage as accessible platforms for reflection upon shared experiences and a means for personal expression to be collectively experienced by all.

Nicolas Party: Red Forest. 30 June at Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong

0

‘The history of landscape painting retraces humanity’s continually shifting relationship to our natural environment. The greatest landscape paintings both contain ideas and question the viewer about it.’

–– Nicolas Party

Best known for his unique approach to landscapes, portraits and still lifes created in pastel, critically admired New York-based Swiss artist Nicolas Party directs his idiosyncratic choice of medium toward otherworldly depictions of objects, both natural and manmade. Beginning 30 June 2022, Hauser & Wirth will debut ‘Red Forest,’ Nicolas Party’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, in which Party looks to the five elements of the material world as his starting point: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Comprised of 13 new pastel landscapes and portraits created specifically for this show, ‘Red Forest’ illuminates nature’s complex and often inextricable ties with humanity.

Party’s childhood in Switzerland imparted an early fascination with landscape and the natural world, and the influence of this country places Party firmly within the trajectory of central European landscape painting. Considering this historical canon anew amid the current climate crises, ‘Red Forest’ presents Party’s most recent explorations in pastel depicting forest fires. Influenced by his conversations with Bénédicte Ramade, an art historian, art critic, journalist and curator who made a connection between the idea of L’heure mauve (mauve twilight) and the purple and red skies we are witnessing with forest fires, Party invites the viewer to reflect on nature and our relationship with the environment.

In addition to Party’s ‘Red Forest’ paintings, the artist’s recent series of portraits feature figures cloaked in meteorites from outer space. The appearance of meteorites is reminiscent of stones in Chinese natural sculpture, or metal in Chinese scholar’s rocks of literati culture. These rock formations are depicted in remarkable, intricate forms with numerous crevices, signaling erosion and forming a stark contrast against the human figures that bear them. The timelessness of painting and its associated traditions fascinate Party. This is also embodied in the ‘Water Reflection’ paintings as clouds, water and reflections symbolize a kind of timelessness, or the continual passage of time.

In Chinese philosophy, the theory of the five elements is used to describe interactions and relationships between things; they are believed to be the fundamental elements of everything in the universe. Wood fuels fire, fire forms earth, earth contains metal, metal carries water, and water feeds wood; meanwhile, fire melts metal, metal penetrates wood, wood separates earth, earth absorbs water, and water quenches fire – through these overcoming relationships and through regeneration, the world is constantly in flux.

By playing with the five elements in creating this new body of work, Party poses the question: Is humanity part of nature or an external force that dominates and destroys our environment? ‘The history of landscape painting retraces humanity’s continually shifting relationship to our natural environment.’ Party notes, ‘Landscapes often depict either a glorification of our conquest of our environment or the nostalgia of a Lost paradise that existed before we destroyed it. We could say that the greatest landscape paintings both contain ideas and question the viewer about it.’

This new body of artwork is displayed against brightly painted walls; Party’s early interest in graffiti and murals – his projects in this arena have included major commissions for the Dallas Museum of Art and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles – has led to a particular approach toward the installation and presentation of his pastels. He routinely deploys color and makes architectural interventions in exhibition spaces in order to construct enveloping experiences for the viewer.

‘Red Forest’ coincides with Nicolas Party’s current solo exhibition ‘L’heure Mauve’ at Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, which is on view until 16 October 2022. In March, RxArt revealed a commissioned installation by Party titled ‘Trees for Children’, a 207-foot-long mural at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

About the Artist

Born in Lausanne in 1980, Nicolas Party is a figurative painter who has achieved critical admiration for his familiar yet unsettling landscapes, portraits and still lifes that simultaneously celebrate and challenge conventions of representational painting. His works are primarily created in soft pastel, an idiosyncratic choice of medium in the 21st Century, and one that allows for exceptional degrees of intensity and fluidity in his depictions of objects both natural and manmade. Transforming these objects into abstracted, biomorphic shapes, Party suggests deeper connections and meanings. His unique visual language has coalesced in a universe of fantastical characters and motifs where perspective is heightened and skewed to uncanny effect.

The influence of his native country places Party firmly within the trajectory of central European landscape painting. Points of reference in his work include celebrated 19th-century Swiss artists Félix Vallotton, Ferdinand Hodler and Hans Emmenegger. One can also find within his works a 21st-century synthesis of the sorts of impulses and ideas that fueled the Renaissance and late 19th-century, early 20th-century figurative painting, the compositional strategies of Rosalba Carriera and Rachel Ruysch and the visions of such self-taught artists as Louis Eilshemius and Milton Avery.

In addition to paintings, Party creates public murals, pietra dura, ceramics, installation works and sculptures, including painted busts and body parts that allude to the famous fragments of ancient Greece and Rome. His brightly-colored androgynous figures vary in scale from the handheld to the monumental, and are displayed on tromp l’oeil marble plinths of differing heights that upend conventional perspective.

Based in New York and Brussels, Party studied at the Lausanne School of Art in Switzerland before receiving his MFA from Glasgow School of Art in Scotland.

Miyoko Ito – Paintings. Michael Werner Gallery. New York

0

Michael Werner Gallery, East Hampton is pleased to present Miyoko Ito: Paintings, an exhibition of paintings by Japanese-American artist Miyoko Ito (1918-1983).

Working in Chicago in the latter half of the 20th century, Ito was an abstract painter with a distinctly personal and unique style. Antithetical to popular 20th century abstract painting, which was often flat and two-dimensional, Ito built abstract forms on her canvases by carefully suggesting architectural space, furniture, and anatomy through perspective and simple, undulating lines.

Born to Japanese parents in Berkeley, California in 1918, Ito and her family moved to Japan in 1923, arriving in the aftermath of the Kanto earthquake. The change was shocking to Ito, who was sick during most of her time in Japan. Despite her illness, she studied calligraphy and developed a love for landscape painting. In 1928, Ito and her family returned to Berkeley, where she suppressed her knowledge of Japanese to relearn English.

While finishing her education at the University of California at Berkeley, Ito was sent to an internment camp after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Through the support of her professors, she received her diploma from Berkeley and secured a spot as the only painting graduate student at Smith College, which allowed her to leave the camp. Ito then enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1944. She lived and worked in Chicago until her death in 1983.

Ito frequently exhibited her work in Chicago beginning in the 1940s. In 1955, she was included in the Carnegie Institute’s International Exhibition of Contemporary Painting. In 1972, she participated in the seminal exhibition Chicago Imagist Art, organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. In 1975, she participated in the Whitney Biennial, and in 1977, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1980, The Renaissance Society in Chicago mounted a full retrospective of her work. In 2018, Artists Space in New York showed an exhibition of her work titled Heart of Hearts. Today, works are found in the collections of major US institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The Smart Museum of Art, Chicago; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.

Miyoko Ito: Paintings opens Wednesday, 29 June and will remain on view through 24 July. Our East Hampton gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm and by appointment.
