The Assistant is a 2022 thriller movie directed by Adrian Teh and starring Iedil Putra.
An action-revenge thriller.
Synopsis
Zafik is unjustly imprisoned and, when he gets out, he takes his revenge with the help of a mysterious character.
Review
The Assistant is an action thriller that revolves around a mafioso theme. It is not bad at all, however it is the sort of film that reminds us of the 90’s movies we would rent at the video store, just to be entertained for a while and then would forget all about it.
It is violent and be warned, there are scenes in it that might hurt some people+s feelings, despite it being adapted to the international market. It does have its idiosyncrasies. It is not Hollywood filmmaking, nor does it have over-the-top action scenes, but the entire script is headed so that these scenes and sequences stand out.
The duration of the movie is significantly longer than average, but it manages to do well within its limitations, when if compared to a Hollywood production, we do miss some sound and visual effects that would exalt the viewing experience for those who like action movies.
It does, though, have a rhythmic narrative structure, and has managed to create an atmosphere in accordance to the theme. The protagonist’s wander through the “gutters” is well conveyed, even with the modest aesthetics and originality. It does stay true to the genre.
At the end of the day it does not manage to rid itself of the stigma of mass-consumption movie making, nor does it find a style that would make it stand out.
Our Opinion
More of the entertainment provided to us by the Netflix stew of movies, which, without being the worst we have seen, it still has a weakly narrated premise, all the while giving us a lot of what suspiciously seems to be a product that sells due to its “novelty” element.
