Nowhere is a Spanish survival thriller movie directed by Albert Pintó and starring Anna Castillo and Tamar Novas.
Anna Castillo stars in this version of “Life of Pi” which, let’s be honest, without Richard Parker (the tiger), the philosophy, transcendence, direction, and effects, we are left with something like this “Nowhere”, a dystopian survival film that has some well-directed sequences and a strong performance by Anna Castillo.
And not much else to remember.
Plot
In a dystopian Europe, a couple tries to leave the country (Spain) for Ireland, where everything is happiness. On an illegal journey, the authorities murder everyone in the cargo, except for Mia, who is left behind (pregnant) and ends up trapped in a container in the middle of the sea. A tough struggle for survival begins.
Review of “Nowhere”
After some initial social commentary, denouncing the fascism of the authorities and making it clear who the good guys are, the film leaves Anna Castillo fighting for survival in the middle of the sea, resembling a stranded survivor movie. Zemeckis achieved it, and so did Ang Lee (of course), but it seems that “Nowhere” won’t go down in history because, deep down, it doesn’t seem to have much more to tell and, above all, to innovate.
We have seen quite a few survival movies, and “Nowhere” won’t be the last. It is a genre that has its fans, and what may seem boring to many of us may be entertaining for fans of these films, who may find reasons to enjoy “Nowhere”. However, they shouldn’t expect thematic or structural innovations in the film, as it sticks to the genre, excels technically, and manages to maintain a film with just one protagonist.
Someone once said about a great director that they were great at directing scenes, but not ensembles. This film is somewhat similar, as it fails to create in the viewer the need to keep watching, to continue marveling at an epic survival story.
Our opinion
Perhaps it is the accumulation of these stories or the lack of novelty, but this proposal hasn’t completely convinced us, as it doesn’t seem to want to go anywhere deep down.
